Neill Blomkamp has signed on to direct a film set in the Alien universe that will not be Prometheus 2, according to online reports.

District 9 and Elysium filmmaker Blomkamp recently published online his own concept art for a film in the Alien franchise. The images were well-received by fans.

Now it appears studio 20th Century Fox has commissioned him to actually make the film, which according to the concept art will star Sigourney Weaver and Michael Biehn.

Blomkamp has reposted one of his concept art pieces on social media with the message:

Blomkamp's next film, Chappie, opens internationally next month.

The news has not been officially confirmed by 20th Century Fox, but if it is true, it will be a remarkable victory for Blomkamp and his fans.

According to insiders, the new Alien movie will take place after the Prometheus sequel and Ridley Scott will produce both films.
