Netflix announces Stranger Things sequel

Netflix has revealed that it'll be bringing back the hugely popular series Stranger Things for a second season.

The programme - which draws heavily on supernatural thrillers from the 1980s - received critical acclaim and almost instant cult status upon its release in July this year.

The trailer for the series' sequel actually reveals very little - it's essentially just a titles sequence with the show's ominous and much-adored soundtrack playing in the background.

However, many fans have hypothesised that the seemingly random phrases are episode titles for the second season, and Wikipedia has even listed them as such on its website.

Matt and Ross Duffer, who wrote and directed the series, told Entertainment Weekly that while "movie sequels get a lot of sh**", they are aspiring to do "something different".

"There's going to be a lot of new and interesting dynamics that we didn't see in season one," Matt said, before revealing that the show will venture beyond the small town of Hawkins, Indiana.

The second season will be slightly longer than the first, with nine episodes rather than eight.

Stranger Things 2 will be released on Netflix in 2017.
