After more than a year of anticipation Nintendo has announced the official name of its latest console, and just what gamers should expect from it.

Initially codenamed the Nintendo NX, the Nintendo Switch combines the gaming giant's two different markets - home consoles and portable.

Players can either game hooked up to their TV with a docking station, or disconnected and mobile.

And according to the launch trailer it's a seamless transition.

The Wii U was the last home console Nintendo released, and it dabbled in this mix. Its GamePad was able to play some games separate from the TV.

And its latest handheld console, the New Nintendo 3DS, continued the long line of Game Boys, which revolutionised handheld gaming.

So is the Switch more like the Wii or the 3DS? Nintendo told Polygon it's a home console "first and foremost".

"We have made no announcement regarding the future of Nintendo 3DS. Obviously with sales of almost 60 million 3DS portables worldwide, there's still a huge hunger for new games, such as Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon."

The Switch has a very modular appearance with the 'Joy-Con' controllers able to snap on and off for different play styles when on the move, as well as a separate, traditional controller being available.

Nintendo says local multiplayer will be possible with the Switch, something which will be hugely helped by its portability.

It introduces the concept of "gaming without boundaries", says COO and president of Nintendo's North American division, Reggie Fils-Aime.

"Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like," he says.

Images released alongside the launch trailer show the console will be sticking with cartridges for its games, sized similar to those used for the Nintendo DS and 3DS lines.

The Switch is set for release next March.
