Dave Dobbyn will finally be inducted into the New Zealand Hall of Fame, six years after it was introduced.

He will be formally made a member at the 48th annual Silver Scroll Awards on October 15.

"Music brings us together, in both our everyday lives as well as at times of special celebration and commemoration," says Australasian Performing Right Association director of NZ operations Anthony Healy.

"Dave Dobbyn's music is very much at the heart of New Zealand's national soundtrack, and it is APRA's privilege to honour him by welcoming him into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame."

Previous inductees include the Exponents' Jordan Luck, Hello Sailor, Dragon, Toy Love, Straitjacket Fits and the Topp Twins.

The Silver Scrolls honour the country's greatest songwriters, and Dobbyn has won it more times than anyone else – three – for his songs 'You Oughta be in Love', 'Belle of the Ball' and 'Beside You'.

"Dave Dobbyn's songs can be many things: devotional, angry, playful… but most of all they’re generous and brave," says Don McGlashan, who found fame as the lead singer and songwriter for Blam Blam Blam and the Muttonbirds.

"They can be whispered stories of hope and longing, or anthems bellowed by happy drunks along empty streets after the last bus has gone. Often one song can be both those things. Dave's songs are deep inside every New Zealander. We're lucky to have him."

Dobbyn began his music career in the mid 1970s in classic rock band Th'Dudes. He had continued success in the early '80s with DD Smash, and kicked off his solo career in 1986 with the soundtrack to animated film Footrot Flats: The Dog's Tale.

His best-known song, 'Loyal', was released in 1988.

Dobbyn recently performed at the homecoming ceremony for Emirates Team New Zealand.
