There is money in those old rockers.

The three-day Coachella festival featuring six classic rock acts looks like it will become the first to generate more than US$100 million.

Desert Trip, jokingly dubbed 'Oldchella', will feature The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Neil Young, Roger Waters and The Who. They will perform October 7-9, and then again on October 14-16.

The vast bulk of the tickets to the two weekends sold out within three hours of going on sale.

The promoters added the second weekend just before tickets went on sale. But the sale process has generated plenty of complaints from people who say they missed out, despite waiting for hours online to buy tickets.

Tickets ranged in price from US$199 (single day general admission) to US$1,599 for a three-day reserved ticket in the grandstand or in the pit in front of the stage.

On top of that there is a service fee of just under US$27.

The prices contrast with US$18 for advance tickets to the Woodstock Festival in 1969 (which featured both The Who and Neil Young among many others). US$18 is around US$117 in today's dollars.

There are between 25,000 and 30,000 reserved seats and around 40,000 general admission tickets to each night.

The ticket sale process generated complaints, with fans saying they waited online for more than an hour for their orders to be processed. In some cases people lost their place online without warning.

Many people online are now voicing concern that many of the tickets will end up in the hands of third-party sellers.

As well as the cost of a ticket fans will need to sort out airfares, accommodation, shuttle buses and food and drink.

You could camp on the grounds beside your car for US$99 (plus fees), in a space of no more than 10 foot by 30 feet (3m by 10m). Or you could opt for a US$10,000 Safari Tent (complete with fully furnished Shakir-style tents).

Desert Trip will take place at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, the same location where the annual Coachella festival is held.

The event is being promoted by the same company behind the Coachella events.
