On International Women's Day, it has been revealed US pop singer Rihanna is the most listened to female artist on Spotify, followed by Ariana Grande and Beyonce.

However, it is no surprise Queen B has the highest proportion of streams from female Spotify users.

Rihanna's 2016 album Anti sold one million copies in less than a day, and includes new single with Drake 'Work' which she performed live at the BRIT awards last month.

Beyonce has also attracted recent attention with her surprise single 'Formation', released on the eve of her Super Bowl 50 halftime live performance.

The track explores African-American identity and power, and her music video uses footage from Hurricane Katrina which severely damaged New Orleans.

Spotify is launching a Women in Music & Culture series that looks at iconic and rising female voices, literature and entertainment.

The series will include "Women of Pop", "Women of Hip Hop" and "Women of Fresh Finds" playlists, as well as selected works of influential literature written by women and more than 70 poems read by the authors themselves.

Users can expect to hear works from Jane Austen, Emily Dickinson, Elizabeth Bishop and Rita Dove.
