The film, which features Trainwreck star Brie Larson, is about a young woman abducted by the father of her young son, landed the Grolsch People's Choice honour.

"I'm so honoured Room has been chosen by the Toronto audience to win the People's Choice award," said Abrahamson.

"The programme this year was full of extraordinary films and for the knowledgeable cinema audience to choose ours I will always be immensely proud."

Angry Indian Goddesses and Spotlight have been named runner-up films, while first-person action film Hardcore has picked up the People's Choice Midnight Madness Award, and Winter On Fire: Ukraine's Fight For Freedom was the winner of the Grolsch People's Choice Documentary Award.
