Russia probes band for 'propaganda of alcohol'

Russian officials have launched a probe into a video released by controversial band Leningrad, for alleged "propaganda of alcohol abuse".

Leningrad's video for the song 'To Drink in St Pete' was released earlier this month and went viral, with over 10 million views on YouTube.

The video features people quitting their jobs to drink alcohol -- even showing a policeman being hit by a car and thrown into a river, before emerging to drink a bottle of vodka.

The probe follows a number of restrictions and profanity bans on music, cinema, theatre and literature in Russia.

The band is known for its total disregard for political correctness -- and the government's response to their music video will show how dedicated they truly are to censoring the arts.

And the band's members won't be alone if they do end up in trouble, according to a local newspaper.

The paper reported St Petersburg's tourism chief praised Leningrad for generating exposure for the city -- and was subsequently fired.
