New Zealand label Salasai has made its Fashion Week debut in the Big Apple today.

Sydney-based designer Kirsha Whitcher showed off her collection during the Fashion Palette Spring/Summer 2015 show at New York Fashion Week.

The segment showcases Australian brands to the US market and Whitcher was one of eight designers at the Chelsea Piers venue.

Salasai is now a regular runway fixture and it has quietly grown its brand into Australia, Hong Kong and Japan.

Co-designer Kelly Watson told Viva magazine the collection - titled Self Portrait - was a multi-layered look at a Salasai woman.

"There were kid-like drawings, a bit playful, a bit youthful, and then there was the darkness of the burgundy and the layered print."

Whitcher said there was a lot of experimentation with shapes and prints - one hand-developed sketch was taken from a drawing by her son.

The duo is taking up the rare opportunity they have been given and have arranged selling appointments with buyers, such as department store Bloomingdales.
