Shihad kick off NZ Music Month

Iconic Kiwi rock band Shihad have helped kick off New Zealand Music Month with an impressive run of back-to-back concerts across the country.

The band has already played in Christchurch and Wellington today, and in just a few hours will be rocking out again in Auckland.

Rock stars are notorious for being late to their own gigs. But when you've got three shows, in three cities on the same day, sticking to the schedule is a must.

Kicking off in Christchurch at midday, Shihad played the first of three short but sweet 50-minute sets.

But there was no time for an encore. The band was due in Wellington for a 4:30pm gig at Meow.

The three-city challenge was set by the New Zealand Music Committee, to help launch New Zealand Music Month -- a four week-long celebration of homegrown musical talent.

"In New Zealand we have some amazingly talented, world-class musicians. New Zealand Music Month is really about focusing on what's happening here and how we can support those musicians whereever they are and whatever stage they're at in their career," says Iti Wairere from the NZ Music Commission.

The day hasn't been without a little drama -- the band's first flight to Auckland from Wellington was cancelled, but a last-minute scramble to get them on another one should see them arrive at the Powerstation right in time for their 9pm show.
