A new exhibition is about to open at Auckland Art Gallery, presenting art from several different South American countries.

The exhibition, titled Space to Dream, features art across a number of mediums from Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia and Uruguay.

Photography, films, performances, paintings and sculptures are all featured.

Space to Dream is Australasia's first major exhibition presenting an in-depth look at South American art.

"The exhibition reveals how South American artists see a social significance for their work and how as rebels and revolutionaries, dreamers and poets, they have challenged, embraced, explained or transformed their realities, lives, cultures and spaces from the 1960s to today," the Auckland Art Gallery says.

Several internationally-recognised artists are included in the display, which involves 41 different artists. A number of younger figures are also included.

Some of the artists on display at Space to Dream are Lygia Clark from Brazil, Marcos López from Argentina, Martín Sastre from Uruguay and Juan Downey from Chile.

Chilean curator Beatriz Bustos Oyanedel worked with Zara Stanhope, Auckland Art Gallery's head curator and head of programmes, to develop the exhibition.

Space to Dream opens tomorrow and remains open until Sunday 18 September.
