Teasers suggest Ghost in the Shell might not be terrible after all

The first footage of the controversial Hollywood adaptation of Ghost in the Shell has been released and surprisingly, it looks great.

Paramount's version of the hugely popular science fiction franchise was filmed in New Zealand and has faced fierce criticism for turning the Japanese characters into white people.

While nothing can be done to make the film's white-washing OK, by the looks of the just-released short teaser clips, the film itself may buck the remake trend and actually be decent.

The videos give glimpses of a weird, disturbing film with incredible costume and set design - one to see on the big screen, for sure.

Set in a dystopian future, Ghost in the Shell follows Scarlett Johansson as The Major - a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9.

Tasked with stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to terminate Hanka Robotic's advancements in cyber technology.

Starring alongside Johansson is Juliette Binoche, 'Beat' Takeshi Kitano, Michael Pitt, Chin Han, Pilou Asbaek and Kaori Momoi.

Ghost in the Shell is directed by Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) and set for a March 2017 release.
