It's the event that has it all: Britney dancing with albino pythons, Lady Gaga dressed in meat and Kanye well, being Kanye.

Every year the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) never fail to disappoint and this year is no different.

Except that this year, Kiwi dance sensation Parris Goebel has been nominated for three awards.

The choreographer is up for Video of the Year for her work on Justin Bieber's 'Sorry', as well as best director and Breakthrough Long-Form Video award for her work on Bieber's PURPOSE: The Movement.

Goebel also helped create Rihanna's performance for the ceremony at Madison Square Garden.

As well as a headline performance, the Barbadian singer is receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

This is a big deal and the producers have promised it will be a "holy crap" moment.

Britney Spears will also take to the stage in what many are calling her big comeback.

It is her first performance at the awards in almost a decade and a whopping 15 years since this unforgettable moment.

FYI. The snake, which has its own Tumblr page, is alive and well according to MTV.

In another flashback, Lady Gaga's infamous meat dress also still exists. It's been preserved like beef jerkey and features in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

There's no VMAs without a bit of Kanye and the man himself has been promised four minutes to do whatever he likes. What happens for those four minutes is anyone's guess.

Here's a reminder of what happened last time.

As for the awards themselves, Beyonce and Adele are tipped to be the big winners of the night.

Beyonce has been nominated for 11 awards after she dropped Lemonade without any warning.

Adele has eight nods, and others nominated in more than one category include Calvin Harris, Ariana Grande and Drake.
