With an average age of 82 and a combined age of more than 4000, a Palmerston North retirement home is quickly becoming an internet sensation with their version of Taylor Swift's 2014 smash-hit 'Shake It Off'.

Fifty residents, staff and grandchildren from Julia Wallace Retirement Village spent a week making the special tribute to 'Shake It Off' which has had more than 27,000 views in five days.

The video features ballet, contemporary and some questionable hip hop including flips and head-spins.

Star of the show Margaret Gregory describes the video as "a family having fun".

The video's production value is what makes it truly impressive, easily rivalling T-Swizz's own clip.

Ms Gregory says the video didn't come together without some help.

"We had a lot of fun, we did a week of filming with absolutely professional guys with Rymans who came and helped us to do it."

And the costumes are all original too.

"The ballet costumes and the spotted costumes that we did, they were all made by one of the residents in our village May Carter, she made the lot."

Although Ms Carter admits, the retirees can't quite pull of the costumes, the same as the leggy blond star.

"I think we look fabulous, take away the figures, the costumes were fantastic."

Ms Cater's husband also features as the head of the hip hop crew, with some very well-executed acrobatics.

When asked about camera trickery she says "we're not going into that, it was all good fun and you just never know what we get up to. You've got to be retired".

Speaking of what they get up to, this is not the village's first shot at fame, having also appeared in a flash mob dance set to Pharrell's track 'Happy' at a local shopping mall two years ago and making a nude calendar.

These retirees have proved you're never too old to 'Shake It Off' and have loads of fun.
