The awards season kicked off with a hiss and a roar today as the Hollywood Foreign Press dished out their Golden Globes.

Ricky Gervais was back on hosting duties, and back doing what he does best – trying to offend as much of Hollywood as he could.

"After this I am going into hiding," he said. "Not even Sean Penn will be able to find me."

His fourth hosting gig for the Golden Globes, Gervais has been watching Tina Fey and Amy Poehler co-host for the past three years.

When it came to the awards, the first big standing ovation was for Sylvester Stallone, on track perhaps even for some Oscar love, winning Best Supporting Actor for Creed.

Lady Gaga took home her first Golden Globe for TV show American Horror Story: Hotel, and after one of the longest speeches of the night was actually "truly speechless".

There were a few random highlights. Legendary composer Ennio Morricone won for his Hateful Eight score – an award accepted by the director, Quentin Tarantino.

Then there was that awkward moment where Gervais had to introduce Mel Gibson after roasting the actor at his last Golden Globes.

Big ticket winners at the business-end of the awards included Jennifer Lawrence for Joy and Matt Damon for The Martian, which also took out Best Picture, Comedy.

Best Actress, Drama this year, and likely the biggest upset of the night, went to Brie Larson for her role in the critically acclaimed Room – a category seemingly a shoe-in for Cate Blanchett.

The rest of the night was reserved for The Revenant - Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for directing a film that also saw the stunning lead performance from Leonardo DeCaprio win him some well-deserved brass, and the entire Revenant team winning the coveted Best Picture, Drama award.
