Hollywood director Tim Burton has lent some of his favourite pieces of art and movie memorabilia to New York's Museum of Modern Art.
The collection is an insight into the head of a man behind some truly weird films, from Sleepy Hollow to Sweeney Todd.
Burton says the collection is quite intimate.
“A lot of this stuff is just private, personal things that, you know, just meant for me or to kind of explore other ideas. It's like opening up somebody's closet,” he says.
Some of the pieces have never been seen before, while others are familiar from their time on the silver screen, from original Batman headgear from 1989, to a model of the Edward Scissor Hands suit worn by Johnny Depp.
The opening night was full of grateful actors from Burton’s past and present films.
“I can only speak for myself, you know, that I feel incredibly lucky to have been given these various gigs by Tim over the years,’ says Depp.
Actress Gabourey Sidibe said she felt privileged to even attend the opening.
“Just the fact that I got an invite is a little crazy, but I’m super-excited to be here.”
Danny Devito, who played the Penguin in Burton's Batman Returns, says the director’s collection is better out than in.
“You know, it comes out, that's the thing. You got creepy stuff in your head that still hasn't come out. You admit it, right? So get it out on paper, baby,’ he says.
The work is all on display until April next year; in the meantime Kiwi's can keep an eye out for Burton’s latest feature, Alice in Wonderland - which opens in March.
