Books that become movies are increasingly popular, according to the latest Whitcoulls Top 100.

Me Before You by author Jojo Moyes claimed the number one spot on the list this year, with the Harry Potter series by JK Rowling at number two.

The movie Hunt for the Wilderpeople was based on Barry Crump's book Wild Pork and Watercress, which has jumped to 20th place.

A book's success on the big screen is a win-win for booksellers, says Whitcoulls book manager Joan McKenzie.

"Those good movies always come from a good book, and that then drives even greater book sales. It was wonderful to see the Barry Crump [book] turn up so high on the list."

The annual list is determined by a public vote, with 17.5 percent of that through social media.

Ms MacKenzie says social media makes it easier for readers to have their say.

"It's just wonderful to see that people are still reading so strongly and still getting such pleasure out of books. The votes that we get are really enthusiastic and they often have little notes with them to tell us how much people have loved something."

But only seven of the titles in the Top 100 were written by Kiwi authors, consistent with previous years.

"I'm always disappointed that there aren't more," says Ms McKenzie.

"I'd love to see more than just the seven books that have turned up but sadly, they so often seem to be outweighted by the international titles."
