One of cinema's most beloved props needs a restoration, and people are pledging a lot of money to see it happen.

The Smithsonian National Museum of American History is running a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for the preservation of Dorothy's famous red slippers from the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz.

After less than a week online, the campaign has raised almost US$240,000, with more than 4,390 donors.

The aim is to raise US$300,000 (NZ$418,819) to purchase a technologically advanced display case to safely house the prop, worn by Judy Garland in the film, for future generations.

Originally built by the MGM Studios prop department nearly 80 years ago, Dorothy's slippers weren't made to last much longer than one trip to Oz and back.
