X Factor NZ: Moorhouse eliminated

Moorhouse is no more.

The popular Christchurch-based boyband was last night voted out of The X Factor NZ.

But despite their ardent fan base, the vote failed to hold up for the group made up of Jason Aileone, Rory McKenna, Brock Ashby and Marley Wilcox-Nana.

Over the weeks I've overheard numerous conversations in malls, on the streets and in the queue for the X Factor studio audience: fans talking about their favourite band member, their favourite performance, and excitement about seeing them live.

I wasn't a huge fan of the group in the early stages of the series but the turning point for me was when they covered 'That Power' by will.i.am in episode seventeen.

Since then their popularity appeared unstoppable.

So, with such a big fan base and performances going from strength to strength, it was a huge surprise to see them going home. Instead of giving last-chance performances before elimination, Moorhouse instead gave a farewell performance of Justin Timberlake's 'Mirrors'.

The band says they never thought they would get this far.

"We love you NZ and thank you for supporting us!" they said after the show.

Judge Melanie Blatt, the group's mentor, said New Zealand had made the wrong decision, but that it wasn't the end for the group.

"This has been great training for these boys, and they have been a pleasure to work with. This ain’t the last you have seen of them New Zealand!" she said.

The three acts that will compete this weekend to become New Zealand's first X Factor winner are:

  • Jackie Thomas, the only act to have never been in the bottom two;
  • Whenua Patuwai, who has a huge fan base and the support of Stan Walker;
  • Benny Tipene, who is unique and is super keen to release his own material.

Moorhouse will be talking to 3 News later today.
