Warner Bros has announced that Zack Snyder will direct a Justice League film following his Batman vs Superman sequel to Man of Steel.

Henry Cavill is expected to return as Superman in the ensemble film, along with Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot, who are set to play Batman and Wonder Woman in 2016's Man of Steel sequel.

The Justice League is a DC Comics superhero team similar to Marvel's Avengers. The original comic book line-up consisted of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman and the Martian Manhunter, although several other superheroes and sidekicks joined and left the team over the years.

Variety recently reported that theatre actor Ray Fisher has been cast as Cyborg before Warner Bros confirmed the Justice League news to the Wall Street Journal.

A script for the Justice League film is in development at Warner Bros and no release date has been set. The studio says it is "warm to the idea" of Justice League spin-off films such as Wonder Woman.

"That is our hope," says Sue Kroll of Warner Bros.

"With the right script, that could be viable. The world is ready for her."

Man of Steel had a budget of US$225 million and raked in nearly US$670 million at the worldwide box office.
