GeoNet says it is very unlikely there will be a magnitude 6 or greater earthquake in the next month following this week's 6.2 quake in Eketahuna.

It has set out three scenarios of aftershock activity following Monday's earthquake.

There is a 9 percent chance another earthquake of a similar size will strike and a less than 1 percent possibility of a quake larger than a magnitude 7.

The most likely scenario, with more than 90 percent chance, is aftershocks continuing to decrease in frequency and remaining "relatively deep" at 25km or more in the Pacific plate.

GeoNet says Monday's earthquake, which received more than 9000 "felt reports" on its website, occurred in the seismically active area which extends from Wellington to Gisborne.

The predictions are based on data from quake, historical observations, statistical modelling and scientific understanding of tectonic plates.
