Department of Conservation warns public to avoid Ruapehu

The Department of Conservation (DOC) is warning people to stay away from the upper slopes of Mt Ruapehu, but is confident people can freely enjoy nearby Mount Tongariro.

Warnings of rising pressure levels below Ruapehu's crater lake from GNS Science prompted DOC to issue the warning.

Department of Conservation analyst Harry Keys says the warnings apply strictly to Ruapehu.

“People should not feel that they should change their behaviour or planned activities for Tongariro,” he says. “But they should think about it if they want to go climb Ruapehu.”

The Tongariro Crossing was forced closed after Mt Tongariro erupted earlier this year, but following repairs has since re-opened.
