A family of critically endangered Cross River gorillas have been captured on video.

The extremely rare recording was made by a camera triggered by motion sensors.

The Cross River gorilla is the most endangered African ape. There are believed to be less than 300 of the animals living in the wild.

They are a subspecies of the western gorilla - found on the border between Nigeria and Cameroon. They most closely resemble western lowland gorillas, but differ in the dimensions of their skulls and teeth.

They are threatened by illegal hunting for bushmeat and habitat loss. Extensive agriculture and logging operations divide the gorilla's habitat into isolated blocks.
