GeoNet has released a video filmed yesterday during the Mt Tongariro eruption.
The two-minute time-lapse recording shows the moment when black clouds of ash begin to shoot out of the Te Maari crater.
The eruption began around 1:30pm yesterday, and lasted for around five minutes.
