Sir Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has scored a record opening day at the New Zealand box office, pulling in $782,695.
The first film in The Hobbit trilogy was released in cinemas yesterday and its box office haul is the country’s biggest non-holiday Wednesday opening ever.
By comparison, The Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring grossed $720,933 on its opening day while The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers took $757,887.
“We are thrilled that the film has already resonated so positively with so many New Zealanders,” says Joel Pearlman of Roadshow, the film’s New Zealand distributor.
“It is a spectacular and immersive visual experience. The film is available to be enjoyed in a variety of formats depending on each audience member’s preference.”
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was released on 203 screens in New Zealand in 98 different locations from Kaitaia to Invercargill, with 39 locations showing the film in the new High Frame Rate 3D (HFR 3D) format.
