Acclaimed New Zealand actor James Rolleston is in a serious condition after being critically injured when the car he was in hit a bridge near Opotiki.

The 19-year-old star of Boy was airlifted to Tauranga Hospital after the crash on Otara Bridge at around 11pm Tuesday.

Sources told Newshub Rolleston suffered a head injury and multiple fractures.

Rolleston's agent says he is now "alright", while a second person in the car suffered minor injuries.

Police said the crash on took place on State Highway 35 with the vehicle striking the Otara bridge on the eastern side of Opotiki.

On arrival of emergency services, Rolleston was identified as being trapped and in a serious condition.

The BayTrust Rescue Helicopter says local emergency services prepared a landing site for the helicopter as this mission was undertaken with the use of night vision goggles.

Police State then closed SH35 to traffic on either side of the bridge as the Serious Crash Unit investigated.

In addition to starring alongside Taika Waititi in Boy, Rolleston has won acclaim for his roles in The Dark Horse and The Dead Lands.

"I was shocked to hear the sad news, but relieved to hear that he is surrounded by friends and family and is being cared for," says Tom Hern, producer of The Dark Horse and the upcoming Goodbye Pork Pie remake.

"I have so much love for that guy. We have now made two films together, and working with him on both was an absolute joy. He is a humble, talented and delightful human being. I am praying for his fast recovery."

Rolleston's latest film, The Rehearsal, is currently playing at the 2016 New Zealand International Film Festival.
