Johnny Depp and Amber Heard have reached a settlement in their acrimonious divorce case.

Depp has agreed to pay Heard US$7 million (NZ$10 million) after Heard agreed to drop her domestic violence restraining order petition.

The former couple, who didn't have a prenuptial agreement, released a joint statement.

"Our relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love. Neither party has made false accusations for financial gain," it says.

"There was never any intent of physical or emotional harm. Amber wishes the best for Johnny in the future. Amber will be donating financial proceeds from the divorce to a charity."

Heard has accused Depp of abusing her on multiple occasions, including an incident where Depp allegedly threw a mobile phone at her. She was granted a 100-day restraining order.

It emerged in court documents that Depp had sliced the tip of his finger off last March when Depp was in Australia and was drunk and high on weed and ecstasy.

Depp had been accusing Heard of having an affair with 61-year-old Billy Bob Thorton.

The court papers claim that Depp then dipped his bleeding finger in blue paint to write "STARRING," "Billy Bob," and "Easy Amber" on the wall.

The settlement comes a day before a multi-day hearing on the restraining order was scheduled to have started.

"We are very pleased that this matter has been settled and Amber has been vindicated in the Court of Public Opinion," say Heard's attorneys, Samantha Spector and Joseph Koenig.

"The case was incredibly challenging and demanding on everyone involved, but mostly on Amber who showed great grace and strength under fire. It was an honor to represent her."
