Groundbreaking electronic pop group Gorillaz are set to finish the recording of their new album within the next fortnight, according to social media reports.

A fan who met Damon Albarn, the mastermind behind the cartoon four-piece, posted on Reddit saying the Brit told him they were "mere weeks away" from finishing up on the highly-anticipated LP.

Albarn, who also fronts iconic indie rock group Blur, revealed back in February that Gorillaz were reforming after more than five years apart.

And now, after months of silence on their prospected comeback, Gorillaz' social media accounts are suddenly abuzz with activity.

On Tuesday, Gorillaz posted a series of Instagram posts centred around fictional guitarist Noodle, and her escape from a Japanese village after killing the "shape-shifting devil of unimaginable evil" that lived there.

On Saturday morning, a new story emerged - this time centred on the band's cartoon drummer, Russel Hobbs, and his arrest at the hands of North Korea's "Glorious Leader", who looks suspiciously like real-life dictator Kim Jong-un.

The tales appear to be charting each band member's journey from Plastic Beach - the setting of Gorillaz' critically-acclaimed third album - to London, where the band would reunite.

Further posts on Instagram are expected as the Gorillaz cover the stories of their other fictitious band members - vocalist 2D and bassist Murdoc Niccals.

Gorillaz said in June this year that their comeback album can be expected in 2017.
