Ben Affleck has been replaced by Matt Reeves for directing duties on The Batman, but the Gone Girl star is still expected to play the Caped Crusader.

After much industry speculation, Warner Bros has officially announced it's giving the reins to the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes director.

"I have loved the Batman story since I was a child," says Reeves.

"He is such an iconic and compelling character, and one that resonates with me deeply. I am incredibly honoured and excited to be working with Warner Bros to bring an epic and emotional new take on the Caped Crusader to the big screen."

In the press release from Warner Bros, no mention of Affleck is made, nor of Geoff Johns, who was previously attached as a co-writer.

Affleck pulled out of directing last month, saying "I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director.

"Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require."

No release date has been announced by Warner Bros, which is also releasing DC films Wonder Woman and Justice League this year, and Aquaman next year.
