David Bowie's old apartment, piano up for sale

If you're not afraid of Americans and up for some changes, how about buying David Bowie's old apartment?

The New York digs where Bowie lived during his industrial rock phase has just gone on sale for NZ$9.1 million.

Overlooking Central Park, the home comes with a Yamaha piano that once belonged to the 'Starman' himself.

"Make beautiful music in this elegant, Central Park-facing condominium home that includes a pristine Yamaha piano that was David Bowie's," the ad on Corcoran Group Real Estate's website reads.

It also comes with a sound system, on which Bowie presumably listened to his '90s favourites like Nine Inch Nails, and two master bedrooms - one of which he and wife Iman temporarily converted into a panic room (so he was afraid of Americans!).

The pair lived there from 1992 until 2002, during which Bowie released electro-rock records like 1. Outside and Earthling, as well as 1999's Hours and 2002's late-career classic Heathen.

After selling the home in 2002, Bowie and Iman moved south to SoHo.

Bowie died in January 2016, leaving that apartment to Iman and a 62ha estate about 160km north of New York to his 15-year-old daughter.
