A touching tribute for the late cartoonist Murray Ball's legendary character, Dog, has been painted in an Auckland park - but it may not last long.

The Big King Reserve dog park is the new home to the painting, which has the sad looking character gazing at a single star.

The artist, who wants to remain anonymous, told Fairfax he grew up with the Footrot Flats cartoon and "shed a tear" while painting Dog on the side of the water reservoir.

But the tribute is being treated like flowers on a grave, the artist says. The reservoir is owned by council organisation Watercare, and previous paintings, like internet meme 'Grumpy Cat' in 2011, have been covered over in the past.

Watercare could not confirm if they would let the tribute remain at the site.

Mr Ball died on Sunday, after suffering from Alzheimer's.
