The mother of a deceased stillborn has hit out at comedian Ricky Gervais over a 'dead baby' joke he made at a show in Belfast, saying she and her husband walked out over it.

Suzi and Ryan Gourley say they were on their first night out since their son Eli was stillborn in July 2016.

They attended Gervais' Humanity show at the Waterfront Hall, which is part of The Office star's current tour of the UK.

The couple left the gig after Gervais made a joke Ms Gourley described as one she "wouldn't have expected in a million years from anybody".

"I know people take things differently and I know our emotions are raw, but why joke about a baby being dead? It's just wrong," Ms Gourley told Belfast Live.

"Some people might read this and think we're over sensitive and maybe we are - but it's just not funny."

Ms Gourley said she had never seen Gervais perform before and "didn't know what his jokes were like".

Gervais is set to play a second show tonight (local time), prompting a warning to be posted to UK breakfast show This Morning’s Facebook page.

"Going out after a loss can be a difficult thing to do. There are feelings of doubt, thoughts that you shouldn't be enjoying yourself as it is somehow disrespectful to your child's memory," the post reads.

"If you are going to the Waterfront Hall tonight please be aware of this part of the show as it may be upsetting."

Gervais posted on Twitter today thanking his Belfast audience, and saying they were "very sick people for laughing at the awful things I said".
