The last of Wolverine: Logan leaves a legacy

After 17 years and eight films, Hugh Jackman's run as 'The Wolverine' comes to an end.

His last Wolverine film, called simply Logan, hits cinemas on Thursday and critics are hailing it as the best X-Men film ever made.

Wolverine is the role Hugh Jackman credits with launching his Oscar-nominated Hollywood career, and in Logan he says goodbye to the role.

The film is also Sir Patrick Stewart's last outing as Charles Xavier.

Jackman said working with Stewart was a "professional highlight".

"Honestly walking onto a set 17 years ago and seeing Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart and Anna Paquin…I was like 'wow, this is my first film in Hollywood - I've done something right.'"

Jackman says his goal was to do Wolverine justice, after developing the character for so many years.

"[My goal] was to put that character that I loved so much and felt really deeply about on the screen and to go to bed at night knowing, I did everything I could. "
