Coachella kicks off with some Kiwi flavour

The stage is set, cars are rolling into the campground and fans are gearing up for the first weekend of Coachella 2017, which kicks off this weekend in the Colorado desert.

This year there is a significant Kiwi flavour to the revelry.

The music festival, which includes a diverse line-up including Kendrick Lamar, Lady Gaga, Radiohead, Bon Iver and our own Lorde and Broods, is set to be the most successful since it began in 1999.

Ticket market giant StubHub revealed that the first weekend of Coachella is drawing a huge international audience, with worldwide sales up 125 percent from last year.

Seventeen countries are represented, with most international fans hailing from Canada followed by the U.K., Australia, Mexico and the Netherlands.

There is also a significant smattering of New Zealanders who have made the trip, including a group of Christchurch lads. For Luke Tumaru, Matt Jones and Jacob Barefoot, it's their second year at the international music festival, which they say is "like nothing else".

"It's the best time of the year" said Mr Tumaru, 24. "The anticipation builds for months beforehand, and then when you're there, it just doesn't seem real".

Mr Jones, 25, called the festival "an out-of-body experience".

They're excitedly awaiting seeing musicians kick off tonight, including two of our most successful Kiwi exports.

Kiwi music insider Paul Ellis is applauding the two acts for making it to the stages of one of the biggest festivals in the world.

He told Newshub it will be a "really positive experience" just "being in the mix of all the great people that play at Coachella".

Mr Ellis says it's an example of how well Kiwi exports are performing on an international level.

"We actually do better on the world stage. We're punching above our weight internationally; I just think domestically we're not just there at the moment."

He credits "incredibly hard work" for their success, which will be paid off "just have that presence and such a large audience and more importantly in front of the world's music press as well "

"It's not just the punters on the ground but also the world's media is at Coachella".

The first weekend of the festival goes from April 14-16.
