Guardians of the Galaxy 2 hits NZ screens

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy was the biggest grossing blockbuster of the US summer box office on release, and the hype for the sequel has been epic.

The film turned Chris Pratt the funny guy into Chris Pratt the cover guy - a bone fide A-list blockbuster movie star who was cemented this week with his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

At his side was James Gunn, the man who cast him.

"I knew in 20 seconds that he was Star Lord," Gunn told Newshub.

"This is no lie, Chris thanks me at least once a week, I'm not kidding. He's the most grateful guy in the world.

"He saw the movie for the first time, he sent me a message, 'Can we talk?', he didn't say he liked it, which made me nervous!

"He gave me a call, he told me how much he loved the movie, and he broke down crying, and told me how grateful he was, and I broke down crying, and I was sitting in the car on the side of the road outside Disney Studios sobbing."

While there were lots of tears, the flick includes a tonne of action and lots of laughter - and the fans love it all.

"The music is great, the visuals are stunning, the characters are deep and flawed, it's true escapism," Pratt told Newshub.

"I'm so proud of it, I can't wait for the rest of the world to see it - I have been chomping at the bit for people to see it."

Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 opened in New Zealand cinemas on Tuesday.
