Lorde launches new track 'Sober' at sold-out gig

Lorde has debuted new track 'Sober' at a surprise pre-Coachella gig on Friday night (local time).

The show, which sold out in one minute, was her first gig in three years, and comes ahead of the release of her new album Melodrama.

Billboard magazine said the singer chatted to the crowd, spontaneously deciding to launch the new track.

"I feel like the nice thing about a night like this is there's so few of us we can do whatever we want," she told the 300 concert goers. "So I want to try something that no one knows about yet. I want to play you something from the new record. It's kind of like one of my favourite things I think I've done. It's a two-part song but they're very different. They're what the core of this album is about."

When a fan guessed which track she meant, shouting out 'Sober!', the artist responded "F--k, you guessed it! I really need you with me for this."

Following Coachella, Lorde has also lined up slots at Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Outside Lands, Governors Ball and the New Orleans Jazz Fest.

Melodrama is out June 16.
