Reality TV star Abby Lee Miller is off to prison for committing fraud.

The Dance Moms star has been sentenced to one year and one day in prison followed by two years of supervision and US$160,000 in fines.

Miller was indicted on 20 counts of fraud related to hiding US$755,000 in earnings last year from the TV show and spin-off Abby's Ultimate Dance Competition.

The 50-year-old reportedly sobbed as she begged Judge Joy Flower Conti for mercy.

"You weren't truthful, even when you knew you were supposed to tell everything, you still weren't truthful," Judge Conti told her.

"Somehow you got caught up in the fame and lost your moral compass."

Miller read a lengthy letter before her sentencing. She apologised, but said she didn't attempt to deceive anyone in the way she handled her money, despite pleading guilty last year.

Dance Moms is broadcast on Bravo in New Zealand and can be watched on ThreeNow.
