Emoji Movie trailer released, gets savaged on Twitter

A new trailer for a movie about emojis has left a number of people concerned that the death of cinema is on the horizon.

The Emoji Movie follows Gene (TJ Miller), a 'meh' emoji who can't help but feel other emotions - a significant problem in the world of emoticons, apparently.

Because of his inability to keep his feelings in check, he's banished to a part of the emoji list where the unused are left - never to pop up on his user's phone again.

The film's official synopsis reveals that Gene is taken on an "app-venture" - yes, an "app-venture" - along with fellow unused emoji friends Jailbreak (Anna Faris) and Hi-5 (James Corden).

Legendary British actor Patrick Stewart (X-Men, Star Trek) also features as the poop emoji.

The Emoji Movie trailer, which was released overnight (NZ time), has been decimated on social media, with many amazed that such a film would ever get off the ground.

The highly rated Cannes Film Festival also came under scrutiny for screening the film later this month, while still retaining its strict ban on Netflix movies that haven't had a French cinema release.

The Emoji Movie is scheduled for release in New Zealand cinemas on September 21 this year.
