First full-length Blade Runner 2049 trailer released

Cult sci-fi action film Blade Runner is set for a highly anticipated release this October - and a brand new, visually stunning trailer has given a more in-depth look at the film's dystopian setting.

The movie - produced by Ridley Scott, who directed the original - also gives an insight into what looks to be a new villain, Wallace (Jared Leto).

Wallace appears able to create the corrupt 'replicants' the film's protagonists are trying to prevent taking over humanity - though he makes it clear he's only able to create a limited number.

Set 30 years on from the original 1985 film, Blade Runner 2049 tacks onto the story of Los Angeles Police Department Officer K (Ryan Gosling), a new character who uncovers a hidden secret that has the ability to send society into a state of mayhem.

He sets off on a journey to find the star of the first film, Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) - another LAPD officer who has been missing for three decades, and K believes he has the answer to the world's mounting problems.

New director Denis Villeneuve, of Arrival and Sicario acclaim, looks to have stayed true to the original film while also expanding its settings beyond the confines of futuristic Los Angeles prevalent in the first Blade Runner.

While plot details aren't clear, the trailer points to a compelling storyline and the aesthetic appeal may be enough to coax some potential viewers to the cinema in itself.

Blade Runner 2049 is scheduled for release in New Zealand in early October.
