The first Monday of May marks the annual Met Gala (local time), where fashion's best come to show off their boldest looks. This year, we saw some pretty radical statements made on the red carpet; some with a lot of skin on show, others not much at all.

Katy Perry has really upped her charity work lately, in this piece she was clearly doubling as an aid for those who were vision impaired on the red carpet. The look, custom-designed by John Galliano for Maison Margiela, consists of a wool coat sitting above a tulle and silk chiffon dress. She paired it with a chrome headpiece and red, lace veil.

It was a controversial designer choice for the pop princess: Galliano is of course known for his hedonistic rant against Jewish people in 2011.

Kendall Jenner wore basically nothing on the red carpet, only donning a thong underneath a sheer dress with a slash across the chest and split skirt.

The gown was part of La Perla Haute Couture Collection designed by Creative Director Julia Haart.

The material was created from 85,000 hand painted and placed crystals and took 160 hours of labour, the Daily Mail reported.

Kendall told Allure magazine that it was "a little controversial".

"I don't know. It's pretty sexual but, yeah, it's cool. It's like, it's very like, I don't know."

Thank you for the insight Kendall.

Jayden Smith

You may have thought the weird gimp suit Jayden Smith wore for Kim and Kanye's engagement was the weirdest look he's ever pulled off, and you'd be right.

But this comes in at a close second.

After chopping off his famous dread locks a few weeks for an upcoming film role, Smith saved his cut hair to proudly carry on the red carpet.

He accompanied the look with some gaudy grills and a women's suit. Because he's Jayden Smith and all is right with the world.

Rihanna was drowning in this collage of an ensemble. But you have to give her credit for doing what Ri Ri does best: stunning everyone on the red carpet. The singer wore a Rei Kawakubo-designed Comme des Garcons dress, with layers upon layers of petals coming up all the way to the neck. She paired the dress with heels that laces that came up to the mid-thigh.
