Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger has launched a bizarre attack on Corey Taylor, labelling Slipknot a "gimmick" band and Stone Sour "Nickelback-lite".

The inflammatory comments were made during an interview with Metal Covenant, which can be watched in full below.

Taylor, renowned for his own outspoken opinions, has remained uncharacteristically quiet about Kroeger's outburst, shrugging it off by retweeting a fan who said it was "better not to respond".

Avril Lavigne's estranged husband Kroeger, 42, launched the salvo after the interviewer suggested Stone Sour was as diverse as Nickelback.

"Yeah, because they're trying to be Nickelback... They're okay, but they're not as good as Nickelback. They sound like Nickelback-lite," he said.

"[Taylor] talks about how easy it is to write a hit song. Well, show me. Show me. Write one. I have yet to hear one."

Kroeger went on to slate Taylor's more successful act, Slipknot, by claiming they wouldn't be as popular without their "gimmicks".

"They had to put on masks and jump around. How good can your music be if you've gotta beat each other up on stage and throw up in your own masks every night? I mean, music shouldn't come with a gimmick; I mean, music should just be music. None of my favourite music comes with a gimmick. And [Taylor] got tired of sitting behind a mask, he wanted people to know what he looks like, so he started Stone Sour."

In a 2002 interview with Rock Sound, Taylor criticised his then-Roadrunner label-mates Nickelback for being "f**king pretty boys", claiming Kroeger looked "like Shaggy from Scooby Doo".

He claimed to be "very, very bitter" over the record label allegedly using funds acquired from Slipknot to make Nickelback "happy", while not helping his band out as much as they should have.
