A new TV show starring Jessica Biel has just debuted in the US and is rating exceptionally well - by those who are able to sit through all of its shocking scenes.

The Sinner is said to follow a woman who randomly snaps one day and stabs a man to death on the beach, in front of shocked family members and strangers.

Its debut episode racked up 3.3 million viewers, scored 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.7/10 on IMDb.

Among the slew of online responses are some people saying they couldn't endure the entire first episode, it was so horrific.

Matt Zoller Seitz reviewed it for Vulture.com and says even as a 'lifelong horror fan', he had to look away from one violent scene altogether each of the three times he saw the episode.

"Every violent action occurs slightly before or after you think it's going to, and that's what makes it so upsetting," writes Zoller Seitz.

"If you've ever witnessed real violence, the kind that seems to erupt from the dull fabric of everyday life like magma from the earth, and that is as clumsy as it is shocking, you'll appreciate how this moment has been executed."

Many Twitter users also reacted to The Sinner's terrifying violence, generally with animated gifs.
