Katy Perry tries her hand at comedy during VMAs

Katy Perry hosted today's MTV VMAs ceremony, and boy did she... try.

The 'Swish Swish' singer was running the show during Sunday's awards ceremony (local time), and her series of jokes and skits could be surmised with one word: trainwreck.

They all hinged on Perry pretending she was returning to Earth after being in space for a year, and learning how to be a pop star in 2017.

Most of them fell flat, with occasional titters and little applause from the mostly confused crowd.

Fans quickly turned to Twitter to pan the host's performance, which seemed  perfectly summarised by moments from Erin DeGeneres and musician and producer Jack Antonoff.

It's worth nothing that Antonoff co-wrote and produced Swift's new, record-breaking hit 'Look What You Made Me Do,' which is speculated to be partially about Perry and the years-long feud between the pop stars.
