Learn to take portrait photos like a pro

New Zealander Stuart Robertson describes himself as an 'aspiring' photographer, as he's had no formal training.

As Newshub found out, 'inspiring' may be a more apt description.

The man is a master photographer who has taken photos in more than 50 countries with subjects ranging from the Dalai Lama and Demi Moore to street prostitutes and gang members.

He has received global acclaim for his art project, Peace in 10000 Hands, where he photographed people holding a single white rose. In the last few months, he's been working on Huawei's 100 Portraits, 100 Untold Stories campaign, capturing the images and stories of Australians and New Zealanders.

Newshub caught up with him in his hometown of Auckland, to convince him to share some quick tips and tricks on how to take the perfect portrait using a smartphone camera.

He talked about what to look for before capturing an image, how to experiment with filter options and whether to crop.

All of the portraits in this video are taken on a Huawei P10, using its Leica dual-lens camera.
