A meme designed to infuriate '90s pop culture purists has instead been immortalised on a wall mural in the Austrian town of Lintz.

The meme that circulated around the internet in 2016 pokes fun at the similarities between deceased Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain and Joe Dirt actor David Spade.

It includes the wrongly attributed quote "it's better to burn out than fade away" to Cobain, when it actually came from Neil Young.

That meme then became the most permanent of artworks - a mural on a wall in Austria.

Now everyone is very confused, none more so than Spade himself.

"Everyone is sending me this," Spade tweeted on Friday, with an image of the Kurt Cobain meme/mural designed by street artist Lushsux.

He then followed it up with a post of the original photo of himself, tweeting: "Picture that was on mural. Why's it on it who knows. Oh well I blame that crazy internet."

"My god …. Kurt Cobain is alive and tweeting under the pseudonym 'David Spade'," one fan replied.
