Linda Hamilton is set to return to the Terminator franchise, re-joining Arnold Schwarzenegger and James Cameron for the upcoming sixth film in the series.

It's the first time the three will have worked together in more than 25 years and comes after their previous hits The Terminator (1984) and Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991).

Cameron announced Hamilton's return at a private Terminator event, where he described her reprisal of the Sarah Connor role as a comment on gender in movies for the current age.

"There are 50-year-old, 60-year-old guys out, there killing bad guys... but there isn't an example of that for women," he said.

"As meaningful as she was to gender and action stars everywhere back then, it's going to make a huge statement to have that seasoned warrior that she's become return."

Hamilton turns 61 later this month.

Although Cameron is returning to the franchise, he won't be directing the new movie; choosing to produce instead, with Tim Miller (Deadpool) at the helm.

In terms of the story, not many details have been announced. But it has been described as a direct sequel to Judgment Day that will ignore the three sequels that followed it.

"We're starting a search for an 18-something woman to be the new centerpiece of the new story," Cameron said.

"We still fold time... we will have characters from the future and the present. There will be mostly new characters, but we'll have Arnold and Linda's characters to anchor it."

Cameron is also helping write the script, while working on his Avatar sequels.
