Mark Richardson tells The Block NZ fans to donate money elsewhere

The Block NZ host Mark Richardson insists there are far more worthy causes than its contestants for people to donate money to.

Fans were caught up in the dramatic season finale, which saw Andy and Nate have their house initially passed in, but then winning the competition in a second auction with a profit of $31,000.

It was a heart-breaking conclusion for Stace and Yanita, who had thought their $20,000 profit would win, and it was also pretty tough on Ling and Zing, who made just $1000.

The low profits have seen charity pages and online petitions set up to raise more money for the pairs that didn't win.

On The AM Show on Wednesday, Richardson said he appreciated the passionate fan response, but thought money should be donated elsewhere.

"There are more worthy charities," he said. "People engage with the talent, the viewer gets invested in the show ... I think that's great."

Stace and Yanita agree that there are more worthy causes  they've announced on Twitter that any money they receive will be passed on to Lifeline.

Richardson added that after a similar brutal finish for some Australian The Block contestants, they had successful careers launched from it.

"What about child poverty? World Vision? Foster Hope? Homelessness? The environment? There are so many better causes, I'm sorry," said The AM Show co-host Amanda Gillies.

"I'm wondering if we can set up a Givealittle page for the refinery business  there could be a new pipeline," joked host Duncan Garner.

Although Richardson said donations should be made to charities rather than Stace and Yanita, he admitted what happened to them was "a cruel twist of fate" and "bloody tough".

"My heart broke for them ... but that's the chance they signed up for," added Gillies.

"That's TV, that's the property market," said Garner.

Currently, Stace and Yanita's givealittle page has $3439 pledged, while Ling and Zing's has just under $20,000.
