Winchester trailer teases a 'true story' horror that looks terrifying

The first trailer has been released for a film about a real-life haunted house near San Francisco - and by all accounts, it's set to be an absolutely terrifying watch.

Starring Oscar-winning actress Helen Mirren, Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built tells the tale of Sarah Winchester, a widowed heiress who embarked on the never-ceasing construction of her family home.

Urban myths about Ms Winchester, who died in 1922, speak of a curse that was placed on her which she was only able to alleviate by adding more rooms onto her home. She is said to have had builders at her home 24 hours a day, seven days a week, constructing new rooms.

In the film psychiatrist Eric Price, played by Zero Dark Thirty's Jason Clarke, is sent to check on Ms Winchester and her estate to report on her mental state.

However, he instead stumbles upon something much more sinister - and discovers that Ms Winchester's incessant construction, which has resulted in more than 500 rooms, is not so misplaced after all.

The film, directed by horror enthusiasts Michael and Peter Spierig, has a New Zealand release date of February 22, 2018.
