US President Donald Trump has been publicly mocked by prominent members of one of the staunchest areas of his support base - the country music community.

Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley hosted the 2017 Country Music Association Awards (CMAs) in Nashville, Tennessee and sang about the former reality TV star's potential to tweet his way to nuclear apocalypse.

The duo joked that they were warned by organisers to avoid saying anything political, following a controversial move banning journalists from asking artists about gun control, political affiliations, and the mass shootings.

Underwood and Paisley then launched into a parody version of her hit song 'Before He Cheats'.

"Right now, he's probably in his PJs, reaching for his cellphone... he's probably asking Siri, 'How in the hell do you spell Pocahontas?'" Paisley sang.

"In the middle of the night from the private seat of a gold-plated White House toilet seat, he writes, 'Liddle Bob Corker,' 'NFL' and 'covfefe'.

"It's fun to watch it, that's for sure, until little Rocket Man starts a war. Then maybe next time he'll think... before he tweets."

Underwood and Paisley began the event on a sombre note, acknowledging the recent gun massacres at the Route 91 Harvest festival in Las Vegas and First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas.

Eric Church, Lady Antebellum, Keith Urban, and Underwood were among those who sang moving tributes to the victims.
