Lorde's Melodrama named the year's best album by NME

Lorde's Melodrama has been named the best album of 2017 by music magazine NME.

The long-running British mag said it was a "regret-drenched break-up album that waves a magic wand at pain and transforms it into pure pop magic".

"From house-influenced lead single 'Green Light' to the deliciously overwrought 'Supercut', Melodrama gives you pause to reflect on the past even as it takes your hand and leads you to the dancefloor."

Melodrama is the North Shore 21-year-old's second album, following 2013's Pure Heroine. It topped charts around the world, including New Zealand, Australia and the United States. In the UK, where NME is based, it made number five.

Second-placed on NME's best-of list is indie rock band Wolf Alice's Visions of a Life, with Kendrick Lamar's Damn coming in third.

Other artists in the music bible's top 10 include Father John Misty, Liam Gallagher, Lana Del Rey and LCD Soundsystem.

Lorde won six trophies at the 2017 NZ Music Awards, including Album of the Year for Melodrama.
